About maraaum
Mara Aum was born in Venezuela, South America but grew up primarily in the US in the Chicago-land area. She was encouraged to tell stories and draw at an early age creating a near clinically insane overactive imagination and a near manic need to draw that would make Van Gogh proud. She discovered comics and manga in her early teens finding it the perfect union of her two all consuming passions. She even went so far as to mortgage her soul to student loan devils so she could major in Sequential Art at Savannah College of Art & Design, where her “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” attitude paid off in her Summa Cum Laude degree. She is currently refinancing her soul to continue her education in illustration at the University of Edinburgh in the UK.
Mara’s previous work ranges from writing to drawing to inking to toning to coloring. Her work can be seen in Adventures of CG! for CosmoGirl Magazine, Dark Moon Diary, Adventures in Ai Land, Sea Princess Azuri, and a slew of other titles that would make this a very long list.
Currently, Mara is working on this blog to showcase her new Steampunk Project: Cog Chronicles. What the story unfold step by step and see the graphic novel take shape!
LIGHTNING BOLTS!!! Love this one. This was one of those covers where I kept having to tell people “It will be cool, I promise.” It didn’t get the lightning bolts until the coloring process, so it wasn’t really exciting until now!

Group shot! Another cover concept of C.O.G. This was surprisingly the most difficult to color because each character has their own color scheme and I needed to to unify it. This also features characters not appearing on other covers before: Mrs. Applegarth, Pruitt & oh so sexy Dr. Cavendish.

The Dance between Myles & Delyth. In the background is the sinister Lord Abendroth. A lot of research went into Delyth’s dress. It is chartreuse, the same color of absinthe, lol. Contrary to popular belief, Victorian loved bright colors for their evening dressed.

And we get to my third Cover Concept for C.O.G.! This one features the Aeolus Airship and introduces the dashing Plunkett and the spunky Pyott. Plunkett’s the dark haired guy swinging along with Rosejack, and Pyott is the fellow in the jetpack and wings.

More covers for C.O.G.! This one has the uber sexy Rosejack being uber sexy, lol. This was fun because I got to show the two different versions of Myles, the everyday inventor and the gentleman.

At last! The first of my series of potential covers for C.O.G. This is the Golden Sparrows Cover. I features Delyth & Myles, with Myles being all mysterious, lol. I hand stained the paper texture used here and scanned them into the computer. At the moment, this is perhaps going to be the first cover in the series.

This in the 6th and final pencil and layout cover. Though I have tried to do as much as I can in drawing, this one is going to have a lot of digital lightning bolts and currents throughout it. The composition was in a way a reverse of the first issue, but not literally. I completed it surprisingly quickly.

The cover pencils and layout for issue #5. This was the most simple but it was probably one of the most fun. It gave me the opportunity to draw a lot oc characters I haven’t been able to before now, like Pyott & Pruitt. The art nouveau frame was something I created on a whim while doing the pencils.

More Pencils with Layout, this time Issue #4. This had a lot of research behind it to get the clothing right. I had to walk a very fin line with the dress, as dresses at the time would probably be considered gaudy monstrosities today. I decided ultimately to be more accurate and went for all the details. Usually when I see victorian comics artist skimp on dress details. I wanted to highlight them. Myles’s formal kilt was easier but I’m still in the process of creating my own tartan for him.

This is the pencils and layout of Issue #3’s cover. Generally, after I have a layout I’m happy with, I scan it into the computer and then blow it up to actual drawing sise, which in this case was 11″ X 17″. Then I would very loosely and lightly trace my initial layout on the page as a very rough, and I do mean rough, underdrawing for my pencils.
